Chester Grosvenor & Spa, Five Star Hotel Chester

The Riedel Cellar

A new fine dining experience awaits gourmet food and wine lovers at The Chester Grosvenor. ‘The Riedel Cellar at The Chester Grosvenor’ offers exquisite food, with bespoke menus designed by our Michelin star chef Simon Radley and his team, in the unique surroundings of one of the most comprehensive wine cellars in the UK with almost 10,000 bottles of wine and champagne in stock.

Diners will enjoy exclusive sommelier-chosen wines sipped from exquisite hand made ‘Sommelier Black Tie’ glasses from wine glassware specialists Riedel. Seated at a specially commissioned mahogany and silver inlaid dining table guests will enjoy an individually designed menu which celebrates British classics with a distinctive Simon Radley twist.

As our Managing Director Jonathan Slater says: “This is about creating new experiences for people here at The Chester Grosvenor. We have a fantastic full working cellar, and we do offer tours of it as well as wine tasting experiences, but we wanted to take it one step further. People find eating and drinking in unusual surroundings interesting and this is distinctive, memorable and creative."

Bringing together a fine dining experience in a working wine cellar is a first for the North West. Parts of the cellar run under Eastgate, the road which runs through Chester city centre, and predate the hotel which opened in 1865. The working cellar has been reconfigured to accommodate a dining table and refurbished with new lighting installed and rare bottles of wine presented behind decorative iron gates.

A full wine and champagne list, chosen by our sommelier Garry Clarke, is available and will include Petrus, DRC, Taittinger and Krug Clos d’Ambonnay. Wines will be chosen from over 1,000 bins in the cellar and served in specialist ‘Sommelier Black Tie’ glasses which celebrate Riedel’s design classic glasses from the 1950s.

Jonathan Slater said: “It is as perfect for special occasions, such as a landmark birthday or a marriage proposal, as it is for a dinner with friends. Anybody can book it and interest has already been very strong. But the venue remains a working cellar and staff will be using it as such. We think that’s going to be part of what makes it unique for people.”

‘The Riedel Cellar at The Chester Grosvenor’ is available for private lunches or dinners for a maximum of 12 people with a minimum spend of £1,750 plus service charge and is suitable for both the corporate and leisure market.
