Jonathan Slater: A Profile

Jonathan Slater has been at the helm of The Chester Grosvenor for nearly 24 years, almost 21 of which as Managing Director. During the late 1980's he personally supervised every aspect of a multi million pound refurbishment which transformed this handsome Grade II listed building and included the first closure in its 140 year history to allow the reconfiguration of the entire ground floor and the creation of two award winning restaurants, La Brasserie and Arkle.

Jonathan has just completed his third two-year term as Chairman and continues as a Director of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a marketing consortium representing in excess of 400 independent hotels in over 58 countries. A founder director of the consortium, he is passionate about active participation in its worldwide development, focusing on brand distribution and global reservations.

An inexhaustible supporter of tourism to the UK and to the Cheshire region in particular, and committed to introducing The Chester Grosvenor to all corners of the globe, Jonathan finds the time to undertake a number of overseas sales trips each year and clocks up an impressive number of air miles in doing just that! His other roles include directorship of Visit Chester & Cheshire which is managed by the Cheshire and Warrington Tourism Board, Chairmanship of the Chester and Cheshire Conference Desk, funded by the public and private sectors to maximise the meetings industry in the region, and the Executive Committee of the Chester Hospitality Association with the purpose of tackling regional and national issues affecting the industry such as tourism, the environment and legislation.

Jonathan received the prestigious Catey Award as "Manager of the Year" in July 2002 and joined the elite ranks of the Master Innholders in 2003. He is a firm believer in recognising and developing the true potential of every member of his team. The Chester Grosvenor and Spa achieved reaccreditation of the Investor In People award in the autumn of 2005.

Aside from The Chester Grosvenor and Spa, Jonathan is Chairman of Morley Slater ARC Derby Limited, the family garage business founded over 55 years ago.

A former schoolboy dinghy sailing champion, Jonathan's interests include motor racing and yachting. He has been married to Melanie for 29 years and they have two daughters, Rebecca, who operates her own luxury hotel representation company on the East Coast of America, and Nyree, who graduated from university with a degree in Fine Art and now also works within the hotel industry.
