We’re delighted to announce that Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor is one of only two UK restaurants to have retained a one Michelin star rating for the 29th consecutive year.
The Michelin Guide unveiled the latest collection of Michelin starred restaurants in the UK and Ireland on 1st October. Still considered the most important guide in the world to eating out, Michelin inspectors have spent the last twelve months dining in some of the finest restaurants throughout the UK and Ireland.
Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor has continuously retained the prestigious accolade since 1990. It remains the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Cheshire, as well as one of the longest standing consecutive holders of a one Michelin star accolade in the UK, alongside Le Gavroche in London.
Simon joined the team in 1986 and besides a few years gaining experience in London, has been at the helm of the operation for over 20 years, together with Head Chef Raymond Booker who joined the team in 2004.
The restaurant offers a classic dining with a contemporary twist, through a continuously evolving menu. A choice of a seasonal a la carte or tasting menu is offered to diners with new dishes added every six weeks, such as: Amuse- French asparagus, potted eel, Isle of Anglesey- Ash fried and smoked oyster jelly, apples and peas, Ewe’s curd- Sheep’s milk blancmange, candied figs and hazelnuts and Honey Bee- Iced honeycomb sabayon, pickled Nashi pears.
The restaurant also boasts one of the most extensive wine lists in the region, with Head Sommelier, Derek Scaife, renowned for his immaculate knowledge and access to over 700 bins, stored in a cellar that stretches underneath the city centre. Also retaining the prestigious AA Notable Wine List Award for another year, the restaurant’s host of accolades is testament to its exceptional reputation.
Additional highlights of the restaurant include the famed bread trolley, with eight different breads prepared and served daily from the kitchen’s dedicated bakery and the cheese trolley, carrying around 30 cheeses at one time.
Simon Radley comments: “Despite holding a star for nearly three decades, each year it’s still such an honour to be acknowledged by Michelin. We are constantly innovating in the kitchen, whilst retaining the classical element that we’re famed for. I am immensely proud of this achievement; it’s a real credit to the team and the immeasurable dedication of over 14 years of my Head Chef Raymond Booker.”
A firm advocate of growing talent from within, Simon launched the ‘Simon Radley Kitchen Academy’ in 2013 to cultivate a new generation of innovative chefs. Now in its fifth year, the Academy accepts 10 candidates each year, allowing them a unique opportunity to earn while they learn under the guidance of Michelin star chefs with considerable opportunities for education, training and personal development.
